Diamondback moth larvae and grasshoppers have been reported, but so far nothing of widespread significance. The photo shows what grasshoppers can do to a canola plant, but their damage is usually isolated to small patches. Bertha armyworm adult traps are coming down with very little in the way of hotspots…

Grasshoppers may be above thresholds in some fields. The nominal threshold for grasshoppers in canola is 8-12 per square metre, although the higher end of that range may be more appropriate in a typical canola crop. Grasshoppers are often at higher numbers at field margins, making a targeted spray possible. Scout to see where that line is…

Grasshoppers. If populations are significant and crop feeding has begun, a spray or bait application around field edges may be enough to reduce the threat. Grasshoppers are easier to manage……

Cutworms are spotty but keep scouting. Flea beetles may need to be controlled past the 4-leaf stage in some extreme cases this year. Cabbage seedpod weevil numbers are building but only spray after first flower and only if sweep net results show them at thresholds. Hold off on early grasshopper control…

Flea beetle spraying continues in Manitoba where crops are advancing slowly due to excess rain and limited warmth. Redbacked cutworms are still causing severe damage in southern Alberta. Some sprayed fields need to be reseeded…
