QUIZ – Canola calculators

The Canola Council of Canada has a series of calculators to help with canola management decisions. This quiz highlights three calculators that could be useful this time of year.

1.

Growers picking up canola seed will now know their seed weights, and seed weight can influence seeding rate. This question is based on a scenario for the Seeding Rate & Seed Cost Calculator at canolacalculator.ca. If the thousand-seed-weight for canola seed is “4” grams and the grower targets “6” plants per square foot and estimated emergence is “60%”, what is the recommended seeding rate in pounds per acre?

2. The recommended target stand for canola is 5 to 8 plants per square foot. How could a farmer adjust their target when seed costs are high and the crop selling price and crop yield are low?
3. Growers still have time to move canola cultivars around to match blackleg resistance with the threat in each field. Fields with blackleg scores over 2will benefit from an updated approach to blackleg management. Using the blackleg loss calculator, what is the estimated yield loss when the blackleg severity rating averages 2across the field? (Take a guess without using the calculator. It will be more fun that way.)
