Warm temperatures are heating the outsides of bins and restarting moisture migration and heating risks for stored canola. (Actually, this started weeks ago.) Any canola in storage should be checked – just to make sure it’s safe. Reports of heating bins are trickling in this week.
Even though seeding and spraying this year’s crops are the priority, farmers don’t want to lose a bin of canola.
Canola will be at higher risk of spoilage if moisture is above eight per cent (even a pocket of elevated moisture) and dockage or green counts are higher than usual.
If canola is low risk for loss, check the bins anyway – but you might not have to do anything with it.
