Canola is great for bees. Most of Canada’s honey comes from canola flowers. But canola flowers are only available to bees and other pollinators for about six weeks a year – if you think of the whole window, starting with the earliest crops and ending as the latest crops come out of flower. A program called Buzzing Gardens will extend the window for pollinator-friendly flowers by providing seed packets to any Canadian who wants one. By planting a Buzzing Garden, we can all help to improve the number and quality of honey bee food sources, and support them in feeding their hives. Every free Buzzing Gardens kit contains seeds for five different species of non-invasive Canadian wildflowers recommended by Pollinator Partnership, and can plant a garden up to five square feet. Order your free seed kit at beesmatter.ca. June 5-12 is National Planting Week.
