Before the Rapeseed Council was founded, in the early 1960’s, the flax association allowed rapeseed onto the agenda of its AGM. Mac Runciman, who was head of the UGG at the time, got up on the podium and said this rapeseed crop is going to be very important to Canada in the future, and very soon we would see a thousand tonne crop. Everybody shook their heads and said that wasn’t likely to happen. Of course, now Canada has canola, and instead of importing 90% of our edible oil needs, we are exporting most of our crop.
